The global food system is under immense pressure, with nearly 821 million people facing hunger every day. Despite this, about one-third of the food produced worldwide—roughly 1.3 billion tons—is lost or wasted annually. The water used to produce wasted food alone could fill Lake Geneva three times over each year. 40% of landfills are made up of food waste which emits methane gas with 28% more warming power than carbon.
